چکیده

Tissue growth w~thout the d e p o s ~ t ~ o n of calcium carbonate skeletons was recorded in 2 Red Sea hermatyp~c cnldarians dunng competitive interactions Tissue contacts between allogeneic colonles of the hydrocoral Millepola dichotorna resulted in unilateral overgrowth In 39% of the assays the overgrowing tissue d ~ d not secrete a skeleton for up to 10 wk These tissues were loosely attached to the overgrown branch, and rapidly advanced by up to 25 mm ~ v ~ t h ~ n the f~ r s t 2 wk Thereafter, tissue growth slowed down or stopped and calcium carbonate was depos~ted over the subordinate branch, starting at the original contact area In xenogenelc interactions between the scleract~nlan coral Cyphastrea chalc~dicurn and the c ~ r n p e d barnacle Savignium dentatum, tlssues of the coral always over la~d the plates of the barnacle without depos~ting calc~um carbonate as long as the barnacles were ahve (up to 5 yr) Calcium carbonate was depos~ted by the coral s tlssue on the barnacle's plates only following barnacle death In both cases, the non-calc~fy~ng overgrowing t~ssues lacked polyps but appeared normal in histological sections and contalned typlcal cnldarian cells and endosymbiotic zooxanthellae Thls type of tissue growth without calc~fication is a newly descnbed allogeneic/xenogeneic response ellcited by hermatypic cnidanans

Past, present and future state of the carbonate system and acidification in Hengam coral reef in the Persian Gulf

Assuming the possible scenario ICCP RCP8.5, by 2100, the pH of seawater in Hengam coral reef in the Persian Gulf will decrease by 0.46 compared to 1880 (to less than 7.72). Total dissolved inorganic carbon will increase from 2006 to 2263 µmol/kg. The concentration of bicarbonate ions will increase by 24% and the carbonate ions will decrease by 51%. The saturation of calcium carbonate in seawate...

Interactions between Corals and their Symbiotic Algae

Interactions between Corals and their Symbiotic Algae Gisèle Muller-Parker and Christopher F. D'Elia The mutualistic relationship between corals and their algal endosymbionts is a key factor in the evolutionary success of hermatypic (reef building) corals. Corals that harbor endosymbiotic algae exhibit faster rates of calcification, photoautotrophy and many other attributes that are believed to...

Declining coral calcification on the Great Barrier Reef.

Reef-building corals are under increasing physiological stress from a changing climate and ocean absorption of increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide. We investigated 328 colonies of massive Porites corals from 69 reefs of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) in Australia. Their skeletal records show that throughout the GBR, calcification has declined by 14.2% since 1990, predominantly because extension...

Herbivory facilitates growth of a key reef‐building Caribbean coral

The decline of reef-building corals in conjunction with shifts to short-lived opportunistic species has prompted concerns that Caribbean reef framework-building capacity has substantially diminished. Restoring herbivore populations may be a potential driver of coral recovery; however, the impact of herbivores on coral calcification has been little studied. We performed an exclusion experiment t...

Simulation and observations of annual density banding in skeletons of Montastraea(Cnidaria: Scleractinia) growing under thermal stress associated with ocean warming

We present a model of annual density banding in skeletons of Montastraea coral species growing under thermal stress associated with an ocean-warming scenario. The model predicts that at sea-surface temperatures (SSTs) ,29uC, high-density bands (HDBs) are formed during the warmest months of the year. As temperature rises and oscillates around the optimal calcification temperature, an annual doub...
